This is day number 203 and you're 29 weeks pregnant!
You have 77 days or 11 weeks left, and are 72.5% of the way there.
Baby's age since conception is 189 days or 27 weeks.
Your baby is now about 16.7 inches from head to toe, and weighs about 2.7 pounds. He or she continues to be active and grow; however, you may be feeling fewer kicks and punches. This is because even though your baby is getting larger and stronger, he or she also has less space in which to gain momentum for these movements. Your baby's blood is now being produced from the stem cells in its bone marrow.
this baby has spent the past few weeks trying to shimmy herself into a head-down position. i thought for sure she was there about a week or 2 ago, but it looks like she still moves around quite a bit. a lot of the time i can tell that she is lying transverse, then i feel her head on my hip bone and get my hopes up, then she is sideways again. anyways, i am so proud of myself that i can tell how she is positioned and what she is up to this time. with sparrow i don't think i had any idea. but it's cool cause i can tell the difference between her hand and her feet movements, therefore getting a good idea of how to baby-map her. (it gives me hours of entertainment!) this is reassuring because i am pretty sure that she won't be breech--one of my biggest "birth fears," being as it guarantees you a c-section in this state. there are, however, some good things you can do to encourage the baby to turn if they haven't done so by week 32 or around there:
-knee-chest position: involves getting on your knees and then resting your shoulders/ head on the bed or ground. basically you are turning the baby "upside down" from what he or she normally experiences, and if you do this for 15 mins. several times a day for a week or so, the baby should turn.
-breech tilts: you can lie on your back with your hips up on pillows about 12 inches. then roll from side to side. keep relaxed.
-lying on a slope: use a board of some kind, prop it up on a couch, and lie on it with your head downward about 8-10 mins a day.
oh and check out this one:(this and above suggestions from http://www.beautiful-births.com/content/resources/breech.html)
-"Cat Stretch with Light & Music Stimulation:
First, get in a "cat-stretch" position: on all fours, head lower than rear end. You can use pillows to kneel on. Take a flashlight, turn it on, and put the light against your lower abdomen directly the skin - the lower, the better. At the same time, use a walkman or portable CD player's headset against the lowest part of your belly, with music turned on (but not blasting-loud). The fetus will hear the music and see the light, both encouraging him/her to turn toward it, i.e., your pelvis. Try for 30-45 minutes. You may need to do deep breathing - the baby will be MOVING!"
here is another opinion from spinningbabies.com:
http://spinningbabies.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=32
"Use of maternal positions that put the mother up-side down can help a baby use gravity to flip. The breech tilt, inversion on the stairs, off the couch or use of an inversion table are all possible options. The Open-Knee chest extends the mother's chin and I've changed my mind about that position. I like inversion positions that allow the mother to tuck her own chin. Myofascial workers tell me this relaxes her pelvis whereas extending the chin tightens the pelvis. This matches what we know about open throated vowels sounds in labor (sounding or moaning in labor).
There is often enough amniotic fluid for an easy flip before 35 weeks. Gentle methods used in alternative maternity care will not force the baby."
one lady on a discussion forum said her midwife told her to eat lots of chocolate! if this is effective, then my baby has NO CHANCE of being breech. choc. is one of my staples right now. i need no further encouragement. oh, and apparently 5 or more servings of choc. per week reduces the risk of the preeclampsia, a pregnancy disorder having to do with low oxygenation of the placenta. it can be life threatening. so eat chocolate! i recommend trader joe's 72% dark choc. bar. mmmmmmm. ps- milk chocolate isn't chocolate. according to rod (my boss), "people who eat milk chocolate can't be trusted. ...bush probably eats milk chocolate.")
also, you can put an ice pack on the top of your uterus (up nearest your boobs) for 20 mins or so. babies will usu. turn their heads away from the cold.
hoo! segunda is really kicking right now, and i am definitely feeling strong kicks up toward the top. yessss!
for anyone interested in reading an in-depth article about baby mapping, follow this link:
http://spinningbabies.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=25&Itemid=28
a little difficult to read, as there are a few typos, and it is quite confusing once they get into naming all the various possible fetal positions, but in general it is really cool; i could spend an hour right now trying to baby map. fun. (by the way, if the link doesn't work, i think they are currently having server problems. but it should be corrected soon.)
at my last clinic appointment a week ago, i was seen by a super cool midwife named anna bunting. at the clinic you get seen by nurses instead of doctors. the doctor is supposed to review your charts and then come in and "save the day" when the baby is born. anyways, the nurses they have there are all midwives, for some reason, as in they also do home births as their own private practice besides working for the county. this midwife was my favorite so far. she was sooo mellow, and super super nice to sparrow, who was with me for the appointment. she said sparrow could sit up on the examining table with me, and when we heard the heartbeat, she really took her time and even asked us if we wanted to listen longer. she spent so much time talking to me and answering my questions about birth plans, rights in the hospital, etc. etc. and didn't obnoxiously ask me if i was taking the synthetic iron pill. in fact, i confided to her that i was only taking my prenatal with iron and also drinking the special iron herb tea every day, and she said i would be fine on those 2 things. she told me that the important thing in a birth plan for cottage hospital is to focus on the baby's aftercare, as they will want to take the baby right away and whisk her off to the nursery, etc. as a hospital patient, she told me, i have the right to refuse ANY procedure on myself. hah! this means i will be a lot stronger this time on not having a hep lock poked into me just for the hellofit. if they really do end up needing to give me an IV at any point, i am sure they will be able to find the vein. that hep lock during sparrow's labor was so annoying, and it took hours and hours afterward before i could get anyone to take it off. geez. also, this midwife's questions to me seemed really genuine and personal instead of feeling like she was trying to gather more information about me to report to the state. and she didn't pry me about my husband or my financial situation. she treated me as if i knew something about my baby and what was going on in my life, body, and pregnancy. it was great. can i schedule a home birth with you, please?
she also gave me a list of free doulas that are currently training here in SB and to my surprise, our friend Cybil was on that list! i had no idea she was going to try to do that! really cool. cybil dances with thomas and they have known each other for yeeeeeeeeaaaaars. however, i have a few friends in mind that i feel strongly about being there, so i am not sure if i will be able to give her the job. i also feel really strongly about having someone that aligns with our belief in the Lord and all that goes with that! so we will see. the doula decision is not finalized yet.
oh and i was so excited because i got to opt out of the obnoxious glucose test! during pregnancy they do a test on you to see if you have gestational diabetes. well they make you drink this 12-oz. horrible bright green sugary viscosity of a drink that i'm sure will GIVE you gestational diabetes if you don't already have it. you have to drink it in like 10 minutes or something and then they take your blood after an hour and check your insulin levels. i HATE it! why can't they let you at least consume something good, like a piece of cake, instead of neon frog syrup. so sick. who knows what's in there. anyways, i was kind of dreading having to take that again, and apparently now was the time; when the worker weighed me she mentioned it, and i took the op and cut in, "um--can i opt out of that?" she was a bit baffled. "but...well, have you ever had gestational diabetes?" "no, i passed the test with flying colors last time, and i also know how to prevent it." (trick: eat protein all the time.) so--she crossed it off my chart! woohoo! that was easy!! i hope i don't have some social worker knocking on my door in the future because of it.
holly and i have been talking a lot about attempting to start a childbirth education class. this sounds like it would be soooo fun! i would get to do all this birth and baby research and share the knowledge! tracy's class helped me SO much in giving me birthing confidence that i am super passionate about every pregnant woman i see being able to have the same gift.
as for baby names for little segunda, we still seem to be sort of stumped. my top fave is still golden and always has been (since high school--my friend jerusha gittlen has that for a middle name, and i have loved it ever since!) but i bet you this one will pop out with raven black hair, and then my 2 daughters will seem to have been misnamed. ah well. we'll keep you posted.

hahahaha, i have been trying to teach her not to grab things off the counter, and i keep having to tell her, "you have to ask first, like this: 'mom, can i play with that?'" instead of repeating the question, she would just answer it herself and nod, and then take the object. finally though she has gotten it, and can formulate a permission question! i was sooo amused at one of the first ones she did mid-april, she was trying to get me to pick her up, but whining "up, up, up." i said, "how do you ask?" and without hesitation she said, "mom, can i play with the up?" hoot! also, when i used to tell her to ask nicely, she would say "nicely" and think that was what i meant! now she knows she must formulate the question with a please and a nice voice. she is getting there.
conversations with herself: "...and what does a horsie say? goes, 'nay!' and what does a piggy say? goes 'oink!' and what does a baby say? goes 'wah!'" -current

sparrow nods, then: "i missed you." -may 9, today. (melt!)
she is asking these types of questions nowadays: "and what are those over there?" pointing out windows, "and what's that noise?" hearing new sounds, "and what are those little guys?" usu. for characters in books, but she often uses "little guys" or "guys" for inanimate objects as well. it's so funny that she usually starts these questions with "and," as if we are looking at and discussing the picture-book of life together and we are merely turning a page.
another couple funny sentence structure things sparrow is doing right now: she says, "i wanna picked up!" when she wants up. also, when she knows she is not supposed to do something a certain way, she says "i don't...(do whatever it is)" "i don't fall down, mommy," instead of 'i won't fall down.' oh, and this one was FOREVER ago, when she first started talking, but i don't think i ever wrote it down: she would mix up the words chicken and kitchen. hence, when she woke up in the morning, she would say, "go to chicken, mama, go to chicken!" now she is a lot more advanced than that, obviously, though she still mixes up potato and tomato and a few other things. she will often say random things like "i wanna go downtown," or "i got a new address."
lately, and this is kind of crazy, i don't know where it comes from! she is telling me, "Jesus fell down, Jesus hit his face." i was a bit startled when she first said this a few days ago, but then i realized she might have been dreaming or had some sort of revelation, so i try to say, "yeah, i'm sure he did fall down cause he had to carry a big cross" or "yeah, he lived life as a person, and i know he fell down and hit his head." today at lunch she was whining for sugary cereal so much that i had to go stick her in her bed for a minute to get her attention. she screamed and screamed. when we got her back out she was meek and good and even happy for the rest of her non-cerealed lunch. i said, "thank you for being good and not whining. that makes mommy happy, and it makes daddy happy, and it makes jesus happy." her eyes lit up. "i wanna make jesus happy! and mommy happy and daddy happy and jesus happy. ...and jesus fell down and hit his head." she does seem to be stuck on something here, i can't quite figure it out!

sparrow's 2nd birthday
nevermind that this all happened a month ago!!! hahaha, but nonetheless, it was a special event that deserves some blogging attention.
sparrow's real birthday is april 18th, but we had the party on saturday the 12th because thomas had to leave for san francisco the next day. it was such a fun party!! we had it at stowe grove park at 3 pm with lots of yummy snacks and trader joe's nitrite-free hot dogs. a sampling: watermelon, bubbly lemonade, veggies with dip, and a huge bowl of strawberries. also, a whole wheat cake with absolutely no refined sugar in it. secret to sweetening it: applejuice concentrate and a carrot/raisin puree. this recipe didn't even call for ANY oil or butter. (i put in a little butter anyways. cause i'm german.) my rule for kids (or any) birthday cakes: i will NOT mess with writing, crazy pan shapes, or frosting designs/pictures for the decorating. WHY bother with the hassle of it when you can just plop a rubber ducky on top of your cake and make it look just as cute and pleasing? i did have a bit of trouble with this year's, though, because i had my heart set on a ballerina cake topper, since sparrow loves "dancing ballet" so much. (this involves her jumping around and pointing her toes while she watches ballet videos... usually swan lake. her arms and toes are getting pretty good! her toes are amazing actually. she has a fierce point and is already standing "en pointe," which i think is actually dangerous to the development of her little feet, but i can't get her to stop it! and she knows "plie," "passe," and a few other legitimate moves. also, she insists on wearing a tutu or at least a dress whenever she does this. which is every day at least once.) but back to the cake topper: can you believe that they don't sell proper ballerina cake toppers? ??? i mean ANYWHERE?!! not online, not anywhere in this town--craft stores, cake stores, party stores! they had a few sitting down ones on amazon.com, but hello! who wants a ballerina sitting down when it's all about jumping? (for sparrow anyways.) sitting down just does NOT embody the spirit of ballet. i finally went to glenda's party cove in high hopes, as they'd said on the phone that they had some, but found only atrociously blue-clad, sloppily painted, ugly cheap ballerina cake toppers. yikes. i'll do without, thank you. i bought a cute little bear with a tutu for $2.50 but ended up not even using the thing--it looked too kitsch on the cake i made. hence, the cake ended up sporting bright pink gerber daisies in 2 shades, and strawberries. it was lovely to behold. new rule for decorating cakes: use items that you already have at home or you know you can easily pick up at a store you regularly go to anyways. sheesh. for all the trouble i went to with that ballerina thing, i might as well have drawn one in frosting after all.
but enough about the cake. sparrow had a great time, all her little friends were there: the lomelinos, the reeves, and the mcginnes youngsters, as well as most of her grown-up friends, though we did dearly miss liz and mitchell, and the lovely may. sparrow had been talking about her birthday for weeks: "my birthday's coming up!" she would tell us every day. for some reason, she really grasped the concept of it from all the other birthday parties we had attended in the last few months. then on the week of, she was telling me, "it's on saturday, it's on saturday," which i'm sure she DIDN'T have a true concept of, but she had heard us say it enough. and now it was finally here! thomas and i made an investment and bought her a whole bunch of art supplies, including an easel. i am in love with this book called "young at art," by susan striker in which she explains the importance of toddlers being exposed to all different art mediums, and gives advice in how to direct positively (or rather stop taking control of) the artistic activity, and also gives solid practical advice on mediums, projects for different ages, and where to order supplies. i LOVE this stuff! you give her a creative outlet at a really early age, allow her to freely explore, and basically set up the best possible opportunity for her to become a great artist if she should choose to keep pursuing it in the future.
we let her open the easel in the morning, because it was just too big to lug all the way to the park and back. she had fun unwrapping it and setting it up with her dad. we also got her 2 pairs of scissors, some markers, crayons, paints, brushes, an apron, and paper. these things will be key to her pre-reading development, and she will also be using the items for years. this knowledge offset the cost-factor for me. besides, it was tax return month! the presents were a really fun thing in general. i love how at kids' birthday parties, all the other kids crowd around so closely and help unpack things. that made for some cute pictures.

thomas had set up balloons and it was just a gorgeous day--hot and sunny, and we got the perfect spot at the park--under the enormous spreading tree, close to the play structure. the one thing i learned from this party is: do cake before presents, and do cake early, like after the first hour, if not within the 1st hour. that way, the kids won't be waiting around so long during present-opening with nothing to do but to help open presents. haha. so many people had to leave before we finally got to cutting the cake, and i felt SO bad for the kids! the REASON you come to birthday parties is for cake! i mean, not really, you know, but as a kid... i am not exactly sure all the kids would have LOVED the cake, but hey. they should have gotten a chance to try it. i thought it was delicious. anyways, long parties should be reserved for grown-ups with a small number of close friends. kid parties should be short. now i know.

and now sparrow is TWO!!! whenever we ask her how old she is, she usually says "three," though. we told her she was turning 2 for so long, that she might have thought she WAS 2. anyways. on her real birthday the following friday, i took her to the beach grill at padaro in carpinteria, a lovely place by the beach, with a HUGE outdoor seating area and an enormous sand box with tons of cool sand toys. it is the BEST place to go out to eat with kids. i got to sit and read the paper for like an hour while she played. the only bummer was that when i went to get some more dipping sauce for my final delicious buffalo chicken tender, a seagull must have come in and made quick work of it. when we got back to the table, there were food bits strewn everywhere, gross! and my last tender was gone! hahahaha oh lament! my tasty two dollars! that is when you feel that the family at the neighboring table could have put forth a bit of effort and shooed the dang bird away for you instead of presumably watching with a mixture of amusement/pity as it devoured your food without discretion. monster! oh also, sparrow was getting a little sick (a cold) and it made her a bit more lethargic than usual, but nonetheless, she had a good time. and got to eat unhealthy mac and cheese. mmmmmm.
(here is a link to the whole month's album, which mostly concerns her birthday.)
sparrow's real birthday is april 18th, but we had the party on saturday the 12th because thomas had to leave for san francisco the next day. it was such a fun party!! we had it at stowe grove park at 3 pm with lots of yummy snacks and trader joe's nitrite-free hot dogs. a sampling: watermelon, bubbly lemonade, veggies with dip, and a huge bowl of strawberries. also, a whole wheat cake with absolutely no refined sugar in it. secret to sweetening it: applejuice concentrate and a carrot/raisin puree. this recipe didn't even call for ANY oil or butter. (for sparrow anyways.) sitting down just does NOT embody the spirit of ballet. i finally went to glenda's party cove in high hopes, as they'd said on the phone that they had some, but found only atrociously blue-clad, sloppily painted, ugly cheap ballerina cake toppers. yikes. i'll do without, thank you. i bought a cute little bear with a tutu for $2.50 but ended up not even using the thing--it looked too kitsch on the cake i made. hence, the cake ended up sporting bright pink gerber daisies in 2 shades, and strawberries. it was lovely to behold. new rule for decorating cakes: use items that you already have at home or you know you can easily pick up at a store you regularly go to anyways. sheesh. for all the trouble i went to with that ballerina thing, i might as well have drawn one in frosting after all.
but enough about the cake. sparrow had a great time, all her little friends were there: the lomelinos, the reeves, and the mcginnes youngsters, as well as most of her grown-up friends, though we did dearly miss liz and mitchell, and the lovely may. sparrow had been talking about her birthday for weeks: "my birthday's coming up!" she would tell us every day. for some reason, she really grasped the concept of it from all the other birthday parties we had attended in the last few months. then on the week of, she was telling me, "it's on saturday, it's on saturday," which i'm sure she DIDN'T have a true concept of, but she had heard us say it enough. and now it was finally here! thomas and i made an investment and bought her a whole bunch of art supplies, including an easel. i am in love with this book called "young at art," by susan striker in which she explains the importance of toddlers being exposed to all different art mediums, and gives advice in how to direct positively (or rather stop taking control of) the artistic activity, and also gives solid practical advice on mediums, projects for different ages, and where to order supplies. i LOVE this stuff! you give her a creative outlet at a really early age, allow her to freely explore, and basically set up the best possible opportunity for her to become a great artist if she should choose to keep pursuing it in the future.
we let her open the easel in the morning, because it was just too big to lug all the way to the park and back. she had fun unwrapping it and setting it up with her dad. we also got her 2 pairs of scissors, some markers, crayons, paints, brushes, an apron, and paper. these things will be key to her pre-reading development, and she will also be using the items for years. this knowledge offset the cost-factor for me. besides, it was tax return month! the presents were a really fun thing in general. i love how at kids' birthday parties, all the other kids crowd around so closely and help unpack things. that made for some cute pictures.

vignettes of sparrow
february:
"very, very more." (she was asking for more food, i think.)
"more polar bear, mama!" (she meant 'granola bar'--hee hee!)-feb. 21
march:
(she was supposed to be settling down for her nap)
"one song, mama!" (waggling her finger) "one song about boy." -march 1st
(she always wants me to sing "about samuel" or about other specific people)
mom: "sparrow, do you wanna walk barefoot?"
sparrow: "the bees and the wormies!" (because thomas told her once that she was likely to step on bees and wormies if she walked barefoot in the parking lot.) -march 2
"that's a good one!" (when she slid dow thomas' knees like a slide) -march 9
"Lizard is sleeping--lizard is taking a nap." (when she saw a smushed lizard on the road.) -march 9
"sparrow bonked this eye!" -march 10
"mama will drink the beer." -march 10
"hippopotamus barking right there." (looking at a hippo in a book that had his mouth wide open) -march 11
"there's the engine!" (she meant 'pigeon') -march 13
"i need more maybe" (she meant 'mayonnaise' but she said maybe--so cute!) -march 13
(she was playing outdoors and found a stick. she placed it on top of a picnic table. i was sitting on one of the table's benches. she sat down opposite me and stuck out her hands for me to hold them.)
"pray, mama!" (ok... so i prayed.)
when i said amen, she said, "let's eat!...the stick!" -march 13
"goes stop! and stop!" (trying to describe how this little 'loading' sign on my computer had colorful little balls going back and forth. she was really excited about them.) -mid-march
"there's the buggy buggy butterfly." -march 16
she sang "Jesus loves me" all on her own initiative, march 16
"see the moon, mama? like quesadilla!" -march 17
we were at the pet store and she walked over to the rabbit cages and peeked in. there weren't any at the time, so she says "Not home!" and walks on.
we also saw a cool sahara snake at the pet store that was really strong--it kept shimmy-ing straight up the corner of its glass cage almost to its full length. she looked at it and said, "so tall!" -march 17
(as i was brushing her teeth)
"have to do the gumline!" (hahahaha! i must have said that to her enough times by now that she thought it was quite important!) -march 17
i was having a horrible day, and getting ready in the bathroom in the morning while she was in the bedroom. all of a sudden i hear her sing:
"twinkle, twinkle, little mommy!" (i sprung a few tears at that point. and a smile.) -march 20
she counted to 10 all by herself for the 1st time on march 20th.
"daddy--do it again!" when he was chasing her around the living room -march 20
we were all in the car together, and she kept saying, "go up! go up! go up!" finally we realized she was talking about rolling up the window, and when we rolled it up, she said, "THERE you go!" -march 21
"mama count to three!" -march 21
"foot is too small!" (trying to stuff it into a coffee cup) -march 21
"i'm sitting on the blue car." (sure enough, she was sitting on a blue toy car. her sentences and grammar are usually so accurate! i am constantly amazed.) -march 21
me, to thomas: "she loves it."
sparrow: "i love it!" -march 21
(we are looking at a book where there is a little mouse on every page.)
me: "where's the mouse sparrow?"
she looks around on the page, doesn't see it, then points to the window and says,
"mouse went to the store." -march 22
"white stars going down on the white mountains." (describing a page in 'goodnight moon') -march 22
march 22--she read me pretty much the entire book she loves, 'mimi's book of opposites,' with only 2 mistakes! she has also memorized most of the pages in 'all tutus should be pink.' soooo cute! she quotes her books randomly throughout the day, too, saying "7, 8, celebrate!" or "emily has a pink tutu, too. she's the best friend i ever had!" sometimes she quotes a line from something that's been back at the library for a week!
"Hi, Hope! wanna swing?" (at the playground.) -march 25
"cat made a sandcastle! happy birthday sandcastle!" (the sandcastle in the book looked like a cake.) -march 25
thomas and i drink a lot of sparkling water. she usually says of her water, "this is not bubble water! this is nummle water!" ('normal') on this day i was giving her a drink of water real fast before leaving the house. she interrupts her drink to tell me earnestly, "this is not bubble water! bubble water's not home!" -march 25
OH and one of my NOT favorites that she's been saying a lot lately is "no way!" like, "come on sparrow, it's time to go home!" she says, "no way, mama." ooh! where did she get that????
"that's a grasshopper! ...it hops in the grass." (who told her that? not me!) -march 25
(it's really funny because she knows so many long animal names like polar bear, hippopotamus, praying mantis, but she also wants to lengthen 'spider.' she always calls it "spiderweb.")
she got her 1st sunburn! march 25th. i think it's because she's not breastfeeding anymore, or because she is eating a little more sugars than she was last summer. last summer i had her practically naked (and sometimes totally naked) on the beach for about 6 whole hours one day, no sunscreen, and she didn't get a hint of burn. this time we were only out for 2 or 3 hours, and she got burned on her neck and shoulders. i am definitely now searching for a blue-green algae product which she can drink in a shake every day!
(looking once again at a book)
"mama, a baby deer is called a fawn."
(wow! i told her that like once or twice!! it's so cute how she says 'fawn' too--she opens her mouth really wide.) -late march
whenever she is saying something she thinks is important, she nods her little head while she says it. so cute!!
"very, very more." (she was asking for more food, i think.)

pregnancy journal entry 6

...and it's a girl. yes! you see, my scientific calculations were correct (ovulation time + time of "encounter" = sex of child). but i must admit, it was still a lot more of a shock than i thought it would be! hahahaha! sigh. i suppose that the pressure to have male offspring is just very tangible to me. i am still getting used to the idea that i will be THAT person: the mom with 2 daughters. and i KNOW it will be best for sparrow to have a sister, and that i LOVE girl babies--so sweet--and this is why i feel guilty that i am a bit in shock. hah. really, it's not like we are planning on stopping, either, i have NEVER thought i would stop at 2 kids, never! 3 is my bare minimum. i think, though, since i was planning to lay off the childbearing for a few years to take a break--provided this one was a boy--i now feel the weight of just--being pregnant. that i will be doing this again soon: it's such a process; you have to invest the time, the energy, the money to be pregnant and have babies. i just pray every day that our financial situation will get better; i long for a home of our own; it just feels like a lot of stresses became more acute with this announcement, and that doesn't even make a lot of sense, does it? nor is it fair to little segundo (segunda!) in here, but i really feel it at the moment.
but that aside, isn't she adorable!? i am so excited to see how she will turn out--will she be a little blondie, like me, again? or have a shock of black hair like thomas? eyes? features? will she be a roly poly one or long and lean like sparrow? and how will she act and sleep and eat and laugh, etc.? it is almost unbelievable that we have a whole other child in there at all, as our days have been filled to the brim with our 1st baby: eating, drinking sparrowness from morning til next morning and memorizing her every nuance. wow, and now: baby. you should have seen that heart beating yesterday, so strong and loud, it was pulsating with purpose, one of the most poetically gorgeous things i have ever seen. i also got to see her lift her hand up to her face, she was moving, really moving! and she moves a lot! i feel her all the time. note, too, that she is "supposed" to weigh about 9 ounces, according to my pregnancy site, but based on the ultrasound, she weighs 14! alright! go segunda! (i have been referring to baby as "segundo" for a few weeks now, tired of continually calling it a he/she, and not until after i employed this apt name, did i realize that sparrow rhymes with primero! hahahaha observe my latent genius...)
"i guess we can't name her youngblood," i said to thomas as we walked up the stairs to our car after the appointment. no, our youngblood will have to wait. which i sense is just how it's supposed to be, pressure of male offspring or not! on top of that, i was myself the second girl, and if my parents wished me to be a boy, i never felt it, i never thought about it...until just a few weeks ago. so they did a great job of loving me. or else i was just so absorbed in ME that i had no time to think about whether they would have preferred a manchild, haha! this baby is also exactly the same amount younger than sparrow (2 years, 3 months) as i am than my sister, which is quite the special thing to endear her to me: little doris... and i pray every day that they will be best friends.
but this girl, i am sure she will surprise us in so many ways! i will smell her newborn hair and revel in the mystery that God has given me love, knowing that i am chosen to squeeze and love and want her. when the nurse asked me at my last appointment if this had been an unplanned pregnancy, i was taken aback: "no!" then realizing we had just been talking about our less than ideal financial situation, i said again, "no, ...i guess we're just optimistic."

pregnancy journal entry 5
This is day number 140 and you're 20 weeks pregnant!
You have 140 days or 20 weeks left, and are 50.0% of the way there.
Baby's age since conception is 126 days or 18 weeks. You are due on 8/10/2008.
Fetal Development
Your baby is now about 5.6 to 6.4 inches and weighs approximately 9 ounces. Your baby is now big enough that you may be able to tell when he or she is awake or asleep based on the level of activity. You can also see a lot of movement in the ultrasound image. Looking at ultrasound images of other babies can help you figure out what you're looking at when you see your baby's image.
half way there exactly, apparently!! the second time goes so much faster, i tell you... i have had a couple of appointments since i last wrote. no ultrasound yet, though. one was a nutrition appointment which was... a bit hilarious. they make you write down everything you ate the day before, and the quantities. "dang, i KNEW i shouldn't have eaten that croissant!!" but it turned out that i was kicking arse on the whole rest of it so much that the nutritionist didn't even mention the croissant to me! yessss. first she asked me if i was a vegetarian; i said no, i just don't eat very much meat as it's expensive. after she reviewed my sheet, she asked me where i thought i might do better, and i said probably i could eat more fruits, but they are pricey, too. she said i was doing really well in the fruit and veggie dept. actually. then i said i could probably eat more protein, and she agreed, though i had been eating eggs, quinoa, yogurt, nuts, etc. all day, and yes, we do sometimes eat chicken too. so she told me on the fruit issue, that i could eat canned fruits and veggies too, which were cheaper. "i know, i eat frozen sometimes, but i try to stay away from canned food more because of the biosphenol-a in the lining." (and--hello! have you ever looked at the ingredients in, say, a can of peaches? not just peaches, no: massive amounts of CORN SYRUP. gross. you're better off not eating anything.)
the whole idea of the county setting up a nutrition review is laughable, as they of course default to the fda's "standard" which is WAY off on its nutritional information. (much like hospitals which tend to want to "run" your labor based on a chart that some man wrote up in a science journal in the '70s stating that a woman should dilate one centimeter every hour. hah!) for example, you walk into the nutritionist's office, and there are a bunch of food posters on the wall intended as helpful guides. one deals with portion control. instead of this much, you should eat this much. yet the poster child for this advertisement is a hamburger with french fries!!! why? instead of eating a whole burger and a good portion of fries, you should eat half a burger and only 10 fries??!! 'scuse me, but if i'm eating a hamburger and french fries i am not considering the 'health' of it in any respect; i've pretty much said to hell with that for this meal! so i'm gonna darn well eat the whole burger (tho i usu. prefer the lettuce wrap--that crappy bread absorbs the juicy flavor of the meat too much for me) and the whole box of french fries, thank you! it is good for the soul, anyways. plus, they have the usual in their food categories: white pasta, lowfat cow's milk, no mention of the benefits of eating organic... things concerning which independent minds have already done their own research...
haha, sparrow was amazing, though. i took her on this appointment with me, and she was sitting there on my lap looking at the pictures on the wall, saying excitedly, "broccoli! ...beans!" thank you, sparrow. she's a star child.
anyways, for the appointment i had 3 days ago, the lady who took my blood pressure said, "you're not feeling the baby move yet, are you?" huh? yeah! lots! "oh! a tenacious one!" she said. but i was on the tail end of 19 weeks by that point! i think you can usually feel moving at 16 weeks, if i remember correctly. i guess everyone's different.
the nurse also confirmed that i have a pretty big diastisis separation... dang. that means i have to give up the ab work section of my pilates routine for now! i have been doing the inner-ab exercises pretty faithfully ever since, but as you don't get sore from that, it doesn't really count as "exercise" for me. grrrr. the horizons on available cheap exercises i can do are shrinking once again. i really need to get a couple more of the preggy exercise videos. when our tax return comes in...
here is how you do inner ab exercises: pull the belly button to the spine and do little squeezes further in, not moving your back. you can only take shapplow breaths during these, but then breathe deeply when your're done! one website said to do five sets of a hundred every day, and you would see improvement. i mean, they're not that hard, but hahahahahahaaa! (that's like the doctor i read who recommended 300 kegels per day! obviously a man. sure, you can *technically* do them anywhere, but they still require concentration! it's not like you can command your body to independently keep doing kegels all day as if it were breathing. i even find it hard to do them while i'm driving. i get to about seven, and then i just...forget. because i'm keeping my mind on the road, apparently!! hello!) anyways, back to the abs: most women who have babies get the disatisis separation, so it's good to know how to exercise the inner supporting muscle, and apparently doing crunches and "regular" ab work is detrimental. but i found out that if you don't get the separation back to a minimum, you could end up looking a preggy for life, as your guts push out on the weakened muscle. it dawned on me that this is also why my belly button blew up like a raisin in the oven and never got little and cute again! also why i look so much more pregnant at night, when i've eaten the day's meals... huh! so bummed on the diastisis. i've managed to do at least 3 sets of a hundred each day due to pure bumming.
another fun issue during pregnancy and beyond is the peeing. not only do you have to go 30 times per day, but if you wait even a little bit, it's often... a little bit too late. and the great part is that you pretty much constantly feel like you have to pee, even if you've just gone! evidently there is some back pocket of your bladder that gets blocked by your uterus, and therefore once you think you're done and are about to get up, more comes out! then finally you are sure you are done, and you get up and start another project. four minutes later you AGAIN have to pee so badly! then you get to go hop around once again while trying to undo the multiple buckles and latches that are for SOME reason a part of your MATERNITY pants!!!
i swear, the people that design maternity clothes are evil, evil beings. i picture them having planted little spy cameras on every pregnant woman in the western world, a small oligarchy of maternity clothing designers sitting up in remote towers in the clouds as they sip martinis and cackle as they observe the hideousness that they have inflicted upon the unsuspecting motherly masses.
first of all. in a time of your life when you don't need to be looking bulkier around the butt and hips, they add, yes, GATHERS to the waistlines of pants, so they billow out just so! (note to self: don't wear gathered pants after 1987!) then they usually add extra bulky pockets right on the sides of the upper thigh so it looks especially bulged. and i swear, you can't find pants that flare at the bottom; it's all tapered! ok, so pants that hug the ankles are popular. SO!? common sense tells me that when my hips are blowing up in the middle, i need flare at my feet to keep things balanced, no? sure, you can spend $180 on a pair of nice-looking jeans, but why would i EVER do that when i wouldn't even spend that for a pair of jeans for my "normal" body, that i would wear for five years plus? not to mention that even designer pants usually have these enormous pouches and tents that you are supposed to pull all the way over your belly! hahahaha! picture their stifling polyester bags over your bun and oven all hot summer long. the bands are always so gross-looking, too, some off color like bright blue or dirty beige. ugh. you can keep wearing your old favorite pants, in fact, if you use this accessory: a tube top. i wore a black tunic tube top with everything when i was preggy with sparrow. if you already have kids, you know wearing a tube top is risky, as you are always shifting to pick them up, and your top rearranges as they sit on your hip--not to mention you never know when your kid might decide to pull at your shirt. the real joy of a tube top, though, is that it can work as a "belly band" (which maternity clothing stores sell at exorbitant prices). just get a big, stretchy tube top somewhere cheap, cut out the shelf bra if you have to, and pull it down so it covers your hips, and you can wear your regular pants under this (unbuttoned) for a very long time! with another shirt layered on the top. it's a beautiful thing.
here is what else i learned during the last pregnancy on how to make it through the body change without spending a fortune:
pants- go search out workable non-preggy pants at cheap-ish stores like urban (sale rack) or angl (sale rack) or my favorite: H&M. look for linen-style pants that don't taper, and either have drawstrings at the top, or a nice, wide stretchy waistband. i found my favorite pants at forever 21 on the sales rack for 10 bucks, wore them thru my whole pregnancy, and am still getting compliments on them. gaucho pants are also an awesome choice, as they all come with that nice stretchy waistband and usually don't hug the hips. (kim reeve wears tight little yoga pants her whole pregnancy and still looks great, but...she's the only one i know that can get away with that.)
as for shirts, the things they try to pan off on expectant mothers are all muumuu- or tent-like affairs with usually garish, bright prints, or too many ruffles and details to come out looking sleek. ditch these. if they are made for pregnant women, they automatically come with at least a 30% price increase, as if the tiny bit of extra material has cost them that much! so rude. you can find bigger tops at regular stores for cheap. i personally feel soooo blessed to live in an age where tunic tops are "in" and easily available! really, all you need in a preggy shirt is length. you don't need to "hide" your belly--your belly, i think is the one part of your body to accentuate, since that's where the baby is, and the roundness is all the baby's fault, therefore beautiful! you can get long shirts or tanks for super cheap--$7 at wet seal, $12 or less at angl or nordstrom (with shelf bra!), and under $20 at victoria's secret online. i love that store. if you do want to "mask" the tummy shape a bit by wearing muumuu or tent, at least go for an attractive one--VS online sells really cute embellished babydoll tops, which are perfect--anything with an empire waist and some length to it, and you are all set to accommodate a growing belly. (always shop clearance first!) one of my favorite outfits is capri leggings (stretch!) paired with short but roomy summer dresses. they cover the butt, and leave space for the baby. and this combo looks cute with boots, flats, flip flops, mules, anything! a good place to get leggings, by the way, is forever 21. i think they are about 8 dollars. (um, according to my lawyer friend silas, that place uses sweatshops, though, so leave me a comment if you know of anywhere else...)
a word on thrift stores: these places are great, if you have hours on hand to browse to find what you want. i can never take sparrow into a thrift store for more than 3 minutes, before i get too frustrated at having to wade thru millions of ugly clothes before finding something that is ok-looking, not to mention in my size, style, and to suit my specific need. i have had pretty bad luck in santa barbara thrift stores. i don't usually end up wearing what i bought, in other words. i only bought it because it was cheap, and it usually wasn't even what i went in there to find. it is a much better investment, in my opinion, to shop clearance racks at stores you love, and know you will wear your purchase for years to come!
moral: don't let the wicked maternity stores--or anyone else--pull the wool over your eyes during your already vulnerable pregnancy!!
(that's like the doctor i read who recommended 300 kegels per day! obviously a man. sure, you can *technically* do them anywhere, but they still require concentration! it's not like you can command your body to independently keep doing kegels all day as if it were breathing. i even find it hard to do them while i'm driving. i get to about seven, and then i just...forget. because i'm keeping my mind on the road, apparently!! hello!) anyways, back to the abs: most women who have babies get the disatisis separation, so it's good to know how to exercise the inner supporting muscle, and apparently doing crunches and "regular" ab work is detrimental. but i found out that if you don't get the separation back to a minimum, you could end up looking a preggy for life, as your guts push out on the weakened muscle. it dawned on me that this is also why my belly button blew up like a raisin in the oven and never got little and cute again! also why i look so much more pregnant at night, when i've eaten the day's meals... huh! so bummed on the diastisis. i've managed to do at least 3 sets of a hundred each day due to pure bumming.

only one religion would do this...
i check out the news every now and again. the muslim world is so agitated, it is getting more cataclysmic, more restless out there every day. contrary to popular belief, i do NOT hate muslims, and i KNOW that there are those out there who have been raised in "moderate" muslim homes, and do not rejoice at the violence done in their name. but two points: 1) where is their voice in protesting the evil? and 2) "moderation" is not the true heart of islam, not the example set by muhammad. in reading the quran and the hadith, you find that everything the "radicals" are doing is true to their scripture, incited by the holy writings and by the life of the prophet. "moderates" have changed the meanings of the scriptures to fit what they think life should be like (they may be more humane, but they are wrong to think they are still following the quran.) much like "moderate" christians who like to read the Bible in context of their life in the world, rather than live life in the world in the context of God's word.
read this about a muslim PROTEST IN LOS ANGELES, a protest to mourning children's lives who were lost in a "religious" shooting at their seminary in israel. no, infidels may not even mourn the deaths of their children!
